What is a temporary builder’s supply and how can I get one?

If you’re overseeing a new housing development, constructing or renovating a large building project, or making alterations to domestic or commercial premises, you may need to secure a temporary builder’s supply.

Crown Energy has compiled the following temporary builder’s supply guide to answer these questions for you and more.

What is a temporary builder’s supply?

A temporary builder’s supply is an on-site connection to supply electricity and/or water for a construction site.

As a temporary builder’s electricity supply is a metered connection, worksites for either housing or smaller commercial buildings will be single phase. If the worksite is for a larger or industrial-sized construction site, then it will require a 3-phase supply. Find out more in the difference between single-phase and three-phase electricity explained.

If no longer required, a temporary builder’s supply can be disconnected once the construction work has been completed. Or if it’s no longer required at any stage throughout the project. Alternatively, the temporary supply can be converted into a permanent supply if the development requires a network connection.

Why will you need a temporary builder’s supply for your project?

A temporary builder’s supply is needed when a construction site requires a water or electricity connection to complete a project, and there are no other available sources on-site.

By obtaining a temporary supply, you aren’t automatically committing yourself to paying for a permanent supply. This option not only enables construction work to be completed but the option to have the supply terminated at the time most convenient to the project. Thereby saving you money and sparing you any avoidable delays and stress to complete the project.

Why would you need a domestic temporary electricity supply?

There are many circumstances under which a construction site may need a temporary power supply. The following are a few of the most common reasons for obtaining a domestic temporary electricity supply:

  • When building a new property and electricity is needed onsite during the build to power basic lighting and tools.
  • To power temporary onsite cabins, or any other on-site accommodation that requires a temporary power supply.
  • To provide power for onsite generators.
  • When demolishing a building and a temporary power supply is needed whilst building another property.

Can I get a temporary water supply?

In a word, yes.

If you require a temporary water supply on site, it can be arranged in the same way as a temporary electricity supply.

A temporary builder’s water supply is a connection installed by Crown Energy to supply water for a construction site.

If no longer required, a temporary builder’s water supply, can be disconnected once the construction work has been completed. Or if it’s no longer required at any stage throughout the project. Alternatively, the temporary water supply can be converted into a permanent water supply if the development requires a network connection.

It’s important to let us know when your project is close to completion. Then we can arrange for the disconnection work to be carried out within your planned timescales.

What is involved in getting a temporary builder’s supply?

To organise a temporary builder’s supply, several different companies must be consulted and co-ordinated with. This is to ensure your electricity and/or water comes on when you need it. This can be a laborious, frustrating, and time-consuming task. But, we can take the hassle out of getting connected so you can focus your attention on other project requirements.

But what is involved in getting these connections?

  • Project manage load studies
  • The coordination of network designs and approval
  • Liaising with the incumbent licence holders
  • Planning mains installations
  • Coordinating service connections
  • Organising materials and logistics

A site visit will take place if required.

For temporary water supply connections, all pipework and plumbing must comply with Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999.

These processes can be overwhelming for many people living in the UK. This is why it’s a good idea to get an experienced company like Crown Energy to take care of the entire process for you.

How can Crown Energy help me to get a temporary builder’s supply?

At Crown Energy, we understand the challenges that come with dealing with separate utility providers and companies. Fortunately, with our wealth of expertise and experience, we are equipped to handle the entire process from first contact to final disconnection, or after permanent installation.

Here are some of the main reasons how Crown Energy can help. And why we are the right company to take care of your temporary builder’s supply needs.

A one-stop multi-utility solution

The first major headaches of installing a temporary builder’s supply are contacting, negotiating, and co-ordinating with different utility connection providers.

By selecting a multi-utility connections provider like Crown Energy, you’ll only need to contact us to get everything done for you. Our highly experienced team will take care of all your temporary builder’s supply connection needs. We’ll provide a full service – customised to suit your project circumstances.

Our primary goal under every circumstance is to ensure your job is completed quickly and professionally. So your project can move ahead without any complications or delays.

One point of contact throughout the process

Using a multi-utility connections provider like Crown Energy doesn’t only mean dealing with one provider for all your temporary builder’s supply connection needs. You’ll also be allocated a dedicated account manager by Crown Energy, who will deal with you directly throughout the process.

This person will handle all third parties on your behalf and keep you updated from start to finish. Not only will this save you money but it will free up a lot of your time to focus on other areas of your build.

Reduced timescales with effective planning

An experienced and connected multi-utility facilitator like Crown Energy can effectively plan your temporary builder’s supply connection process thereby reducing paperwork and timescales.

With our extensive technical knowledge and highly-trained project engineers, we can ensure your needs are satisfied on time and within your budget. Crown Energy will contact all additional parties to organise all aspects of the job for you. Including the required permits and regulations needing to be adhered to.

We’ll handle all associated legal work related to land and access rights for utility infrastructure. This includes councils, landowners, solicitors, and statutory bodies.

The simple fact that you won’t be dealing, and co-ordinating, with management from multiple service providers also means a major reduction in timescales.

Steps to getting a temporary builder’s supply

  1. Application – Complete a utility application form and hit submit. Once we have your application, an experienced design engineer will examine it and commence the design and quotation process.
  2. Design and Quotation – We will send you your quotation along with any site plans. Each quotation will show how long it is valid.
  3. Acceptance – Once you’ve accepted and paid for the work to proceed, we will then process your connection and commence the project, informing you at every stage.

If you’re looking to secure a temporary builder’s electricity supply, Crown Energy can assist throughout the process.

  • From the initial phone call, you’ll be assigned an account manager who will look after your project from the outset.
  • They will request some site plans of the property that requires work. Next, they’ll contact all the relevant statutory bodies on your behalf and talk you through the whole process.
  • They translate what the utility companies say and deliver a high standard of service through an end-to-end process.

When it comes to a temporary builder’s water supply, we can assist in the following ways:

  • We identify the correct water authority to apply to.
  • We assist with requirements about the size of connection needed to meet demand
  • We complete the full application for peace of mind that your water connection is handled with expertise.
  • We arrange a water site survey to assess the connection and determine if a new water main is needed.
  • We will assist in the preparation for a Water Regulations Inspection. This is prior to the connection being made and must be passed by the local water board.
  • We help organise any required road closures.
  • We organise any required underground inspections.
  • We can also arrange a temporary water supply for building sites or new builds.

If it all looks a little too complicated, don’t worry – we’re the energy experts after all. Your account manager will guide you through the whole process. We will untangle the red tape involved with any electricity or water connections, temporary or otherwise.

What Our Customers Say

Had to get a quote to get a gas line connection to the house. Lewis was the point of contact and we could not get anyone more professional, kind and swift. He immediately had the answers to all our queries and broke everything down for us which made it very to understand and reassuring. Would highly recommend this company to anyone.

- Farhan Abubacar

I have used Crown energy over the past 8 years on multiple projects. I have found them to be very easy to work with, they are both professional & knowledgeable. The most recent application was for services for a new build block of 34 apartments. Michelle Kelly was the lady I have been dealing with on my most recent application, she was very helpful, enthusiastic, professional, she even took the time to go back to the contractors with my many questions & differing requirements.

- Steve Lewis, Hall Park Construction

Good old fashioned customer service. Lily, my first contact was polite, very communicative and knowledgeable about the service they offered she was a delight to talk to. Tegan, contract person was efficient and so far has kept me up to date with all I need to know. I would recommend the company to others on their customer service alone.
